Keep Your Feet Happy and Healthy this Summer

Summer is the perfect time for outdoor activities, but all that walking, running and playing can take a toll on your feet.  Here's how to keep them comfortable and painfree all season long.

1.  Choose the Right Footwear: Breathable, supportive footwear that fits well to prevent blisters, calluses and other foot problems is crucial.  Sandals with good arch support and cushioned soles are a great choice for casual outings.

2.  Stay Hydrated:  Hydration isn't just important for your overall health; it also affects your feet.  Drinking plenty of water helps prevent swelling and keeps your skin healthy.  Dehydrated skin is more prone to cracking and infections, especially in the hot summer months.

3.  Use Orthotics for Extra Support:  If you plan to be on your feet a lot, consider using orthotics.  Orthotics provide additional support and can help alleviate pain from conditions like plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and arthritis.  They ensure your feet are properly aligned, reducing strain on your legs and back.

4.  Keep Feet Clean and Dry:  With increased activity and sweating, feet can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.  Wash your feet daily with soap and water, and make sure to dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes to prevent infections like athlete's foot.

5.  Apply Sunscreen:  Don't forget that your feet can get sunburned too!  Apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet if you're going barefoot or wearing open-toed shoes.

6.  Stretch and Exercise:  Strengthen your feet with simple exercises.  Stretching your calves and toes can improve flexibility and prevent injuries. Rolling a tennis ball under your foot is a great way to massage your arches and relieve tension.

7.  Moisturize:  Keep your skin soft and prevent cracks by applying a good moisturizer daily.  Avoid the spaces between your toes to reduce the risk of fungal infections.

Taking care of your feet during the summer ensures you can stay active and enjoy all the season has to offer.  So, slip on those supportive shoes, stay hydrated and give your feet the care they deserve.
